Three Books on Relativity

چکیده

The Mathematical Theory of Relativity. By A. S. Eddington. Cambridge, University Press, 1923. VI + 247 pp. The Meaning of Relativity. By Albert Einstein. Translated into English by E. P. Adams. Princeton University Press, 1923. 123 pp. The Theory of General Relativity and Gravitation. By L. Silberstein. New York, Van Nostrand, 1922. IV + 141 pp. In attempting a combined review of these three books, I do not wish to give the impression that each does not merit extensive consideration. However, there are necessarily many points of similarity, and by pointing these out and emphasizing the differences I may be able to give an idea of the character of each book. Eddington's book is by far the most comprehensive and contains practically all of the mathematical treatment appearing in the other books, but the latter contain many helpful and stimulating observations and interpretations.

General Relativity: An Informal Primer

General relativity, and its application to cosmological models such as inflation, is a remarkably beautiful and elegant theory. Yet newcomers to the field often face at least three types of challenges: conceptual, mathematical, and notational. Over the past century, physicists and mathematicians have developed a remarkably compact formalism and notation for working with general relativity, whic...

The Linear Stability of Lorentzian Space-Time

It is stated in many text books that the any metric appearing in general relativity should be locally Lorentzian i.e. of the type ημν = diag (1,−1,−1,−1) this is usually presented as an independent axiom of the theory, which can not be deduced from other assumptions. In this work we show that the above assertion is a consequence of a standard linear stability analysis of the Einstein equations ...

The concept of mass (mass, energy, relativity)

Einstein's relation between the mass of a body and the energy contained in it is undoubtedly the most famous formula of the theory of relativity. It permitted a new and deeper understanding of the world that surrounds us. Its practical consequences are vast and, to a large degree, tragic. In a certain sense this formula has become the symbol of science in the 20th century. What is the need for ...
